SInce last night, every hour, another Chilean Miner is being rescued from over 2000 feet underground — an inspirational feat of human persistence and ingenuity. Currently there are 15 miners of 33 who have been rescued. Here’s a video of Rescate de Florencio Ávalos, the first rescued miner, emerging on the surface last night. You can watch the rest of the rescue live in several places around the Internet, and I’d recommend that you check it out.

While Davison did not get the nomination, he certainly did make himself look like a raving lunatic. (Thanks, Ram)

Good Fortune, a documentary by my good friend Jeremy Levine and his partner, Landon Van Soest, both alumni of my alma mater Ithaca College, aired last night on POV on PBS. It is a sad and brilliant piece, and from today until October 12, 2010, the film is available to watch for free, in full, on the PBS website. I truly encourage you to watch Jeremy and Landon’s film. Below is the synopsis. The trailer follows.
Good Fortune is a provocative exploration of how massive international efforts to alleviate poverty in Africa may be undermining the very communities they aim to benefit. In Kenyas rural countryside, Jackson’s farm is being flooded by an American investor who hopes to alleviate poverty by creating a multimillion-dollar rice farm. Across the country in Nairobi, Silva’s home and business in Africa’s largest shantytown are being demolished as part of a U.N. slum-upgrading project. The gripping stories of two Kenyans battling to save their homes from large-scale development present a unique opportunity see foreign aid through eyes of the people it is intended to help.

This video tallies up all 2053 nuclear explosions that have taken place around the globe up to 1998. Damn. Mankind is going to destroy itself, it’s just a matter of time.

Eaton Center in Toronto is closed during G20 protests; and this guy wants to know why. Watch him valiantly defend his ‘right’ to shop.

On August 19th 2007, an oil tanker off the coast of Australia split in two, dumping 20,000 tons of crude oil. Senator Collins, a member of the Australian Parliament, appeared on a TV news program to reassure the Australian public. This interview is so bizarre and silly you’d think it was a comedy sketch…but nope, this is real.

On Tuesday, an unemployed former soldier, who raised no funds and put up no campaign website, shocked everyone by capturing the nomination for the Democratic candidate for Senate in South Carolina. He got 60% of the vote. The thing is, this guy is a complete moron who knows absolutely nothing about politics. He can hardly talk, let alone serve on the U.S. Senate! A lot of people are theorizing that he is a Republican plant.
I think that the whole situation is just hilarious, and it proves once again that our political system in this country is a huge joke.
Here is his first nationally televised interview, from Keith Olbermann:
A YouTube reporter’s interview with him:

All of our favorite National Public Radio hosts got together and made fun of some of our favorite Internet memes. This video is pretty good, but my favorite part was seeing what my favorite radio hosts look like in real life. I listen to Robert Siegel, Michelle Norris and the rest of the NPR gang every single day, but I never knew what they looked like!

I don’t normally post things that are this heavy on Pie Heaven, but this video really got to me. The Gulf Oil Spill is getting increasingly out of control, and it is now clear that this is one of the worst disasters that has ever faced our country. Every attempt BP has made to control the spill has failed, and aside from drilling a relief well (which takes 3 months), they have not presented any other viable solution. The whole situation makes me feel sick.
This is the first underwater video that has been released of the oil gusher in the Gulf of Mexico that shows truly how bad it is. Look how fast that oil is spilling out…and this is only one of three different leaks. This is not a minor problem, this is a disaster:
The whole situation is so dire…it makes me, and it seems, everyone else, feel completely helpless.

Anyone else remember this? I remember seeing it on TV when I was a sophomore in highschool…pretty nifty. (Also, I couldn’t imagine George W. Bush making a video like this.)
