I saw this in a film studies class a few years ago, and stumbled across it on YouTube again today. It’s mostly remarkable because it’s so old. “An essential piece of cinema history, the Lumière brothers’ 50-second film is an unedited shot of a locomotive pulling into a provincial French station. It’s often credited as the first movie exhibited for a paying audience; several spectators reportedly dove for cover, convinced the train would break through the screen. Even at this early date, the impact of cinema was enormous.”

“Dormice hibernate in the winter in nests that they make hidden away on the ground. In Britain the dormouse may spend up to 1/3 of its life in hibernation. Dormice usually enter hibernation at the time of the first frost, when nearly all food is gone. Dormice rely upon fat reserves gathered in the summer and autumn, and during hibernation they loose about a quarter of their body weight.”

“In the Indonesian village of Sanghiang Tanjung, flooding has damaged a 162-meter suspension bridge such that students are forced to shimmy across it at the risk of their own lives. Apparently there is a 5-kilometer route that is less harrowing, but nobody wants to be tardy.”

In 2009, thousands of Internet users were asked to remake “Star Wars: A New Hope” into a fan film, 15 seconds at a time. Contributors were allowed to recreate scenes from Star Wars however they wanted.
Here is the Director’s Cut of the final film, the whole 2 hour feature, edited together to form a surprisingly coherent piece. Amazing. And so, so nerdy.
