In light of the tragedy in Japan, there have been hundreds of videos posted online — mostly of tidal waves, mass-devastation, dead bodies, and other sad things. But now, a few days later, the most unique culture in the entire world is already putting itself back together. For instance, unlike in any other country in the world after this sort of disaster, there is no looting. People are helping each other and already rebuilding, despite warnings of more earthquakes to come over the next month. Amidst power blackouts, searches for missing people and the on-going concerns over nuclear meltdowns, Japan is united — a thousand fold more so than the U.S. was after Katrina — and is already well on the road to recovery.
Anyway, here are a few recent Japan videos that stuck out to me:
Time-Lapse Animation Shows Japan’s Earthquakes
The 9.0 magnitude earthquake that struck off of Japan’s shore on Friday did not strike in isolation. This animation shows the true scale of this natural disaster.
The Flood
After the tidal wave, the floods began…which pushed boats and cars around like toys. The power of nature is astounding.
Tokyo, 3 days after the disaster
“I am reporting what is happening in Tokyo Japan 3 days after the M9.0 earthquake. There are no mobile lights, radio players, food, gasoline in stores… people are in a little panic.” Granted this is relatively far from the epicenter, but I was amazed at how orderly society is still functioning.

POWERFUL: Haitian Earthquake Survivors Stand with Japan
Some kids who survived the Haitian Earthquake watch footage from Japan, with a perspective that only people who have been through a disaster can have.

The researchers conclude that a male, 28-year-old Han Chinese man is the most typical person on the planet. There are 9 million of them. But there’s a lot more interesting stuff in this video than that.
