I’ve never shared my own work on PH before, but I thought this would be fitting during the holiday season. This video is inspired by an actual 97 year old bearded woman I met in Minnesota a few weeks ago, who hasn’t shaved in 40 years. She says the beard is God’s gift to her. Also, if you like the music it’s done by a band in Vegas called NK97.

Jamie Mantzel is my new favorite person on the Internet. He is trying to build a gigantic walking robot, and he is documenting it on YouTube. He lives in the middle of nowhere and has no electricity, and tends to get distracted. Will he be able to build this robot? Watch his videos to find out!
Here’s a more recent video:
Jaimie’s profile from his YouTube Channel:
I’m Jaimie… Mantzel. I like to do a lot of things. I’m kinda like…. hmmm… who am I like…. Oh, I’m like a cross between MacGuyver (ya, I like to build stuff), and that guy in fight club (not because I fight, because I’m reclusive, resist the system, and live life my own way). Wait, no no. I’m more like a cross between Stewy from family guy, and… uhhh… well, people say “run, forest, run” to me a lot. That might just be because I run a lot, though. OK, I don’t know who I’m like. I’m a super-human space alien monster with a brain the size of a planet. Now stop pressuring me!!!!

SInce last night, every hour, another Chilean Miner is being rescued from over 2000 feet underground — an inspirational feat of human persistence and ingenuity. Currently there are 15 miners of 33 who have been rescued. Here’s a video of Rescate de Florencio Ávalos, the first rescued miner, emerging on the surface last night. You can watch the rest of the rescue live in several places around the Internet, and I’d recommend that you check it out.

In support of the Trevor Project and the It Gets Better campaign to help prevent suicides of gay and lesbian teenagers, Ithaca College students, faculty and staff came together yesterday to tell their stories and be heard. I’m really glad the folks at my alma mater did this.
It gets better.

In this very touching four minute animation, Joshua Littman interviews his mother, Sarah. Joshua has Asperger’s Syndrome, and his mother answers his questions in a beautifully candid and unguarded way. This is touching.

This 8 month old baby was born deaf — watch the moment as his cochlear implants are activated and he hears sound — and his mother’s voice — for the first time. The look on his face is priceless! Technology truly is amazing.

I watched “Alone in the Wilderness” last night, and it was one of the most endearing, heartwarming and folksy documentaries I’ve ever seen. Today, I just can’t stop thinking about it. It tells the story of Dick Proenneke, a 51 year old from Iowa, who moves to the Alaska wilderness in the ’60s and builds a permanent homestead there. He lived there alone for the next 35 years, and recorded film of himself and the nature surrounding him. After his death in 2003, a filmmaker produced three films from his footage and meticulous notes.
I’m not sure if anyone else will find it as interesting or entrancing as me, but here is the first ten minutes of “Alone in the Wilderness.” If you like it, I highly encourage you to watch the rest of this film, as well as the other two films in this series:
