This 8 month old baby was born deaf — watch the moment as his cochlear implants are activated and he hears sound — and his mother’s voice — for the first time. The look on his face is priceless! Technology truly is amazing.

I watched “Alone in the Wilderness” last night, and it was one of the most endearing, heartwarming and folksy documentaries I’ve ever seen. Today, I just can’t stop thinking about it. It tells the story of Dick Proenneke, a 51 year old from Iowa, who moves to the Alaska wilderness in the ’60s and builds a permanent homestead there. He lived there alone for the next 35 years, and recorded film of himself and the nature surrounding him. After his death in 2003, a filmmaker produced three films from his footage and meticulous notes.
I’m not sure if anyone else will find it as interesting or entrancing as me, but here is the first ten minutes of “Alone in the Wilderness.” If you like it, I highly encourage you to watch the rest of this film, as well as the other two films in this series:

Not too long ago, a video was posted on P.H. of a little boy delivering Herb Brooks’ final speech from the movie “Miracle.” I just came across this video of the same lil’ fella performing a slightly tweaked version of that speech almost a year later at the opening day for the Boston Red Sox earlier this week. I wonder how long he rehearsed this with his Father…

“Edie – rescued yesterday an hour before euthanasia. Edie was so scared at the shelter and was scheduled to be euthanized yesterday. She was so lucky to have Bronwyne visit the shelter and save her life. I just helped with calming her down and showing everybody how these dogs can be easily managed with a little bit of love and patience.”
This is so sad, but also heartwarming.

Bill Pullman, you know what to do…
And let me say once again how happy I am that I am an American. (Compare some Independence Day speeches by some dirty, lily-livered, NON-AMERICAN foreigners…OH YEAH):

A little bit of inspiration for these hard economic times. Also, does anybody know what song is playing in the background? It’s used in just about every movie trailer and dramatic Hollywood movie these days, and I always wonder where it came from.

Mr. Rogers has got to be the most genuine, caring and compassionate person in the history of television. I grew up on Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood, (as did just about every American kid born in the last 40 years), and it was such an important part of my childhood. Today, I stumbled across this clip of Fred Rogers defending PBS to the U.S. Senate in 1969. It’s absolutely touching.
Thirty years later, here is Mr. Rogers saying good-bye on one of the final episodes of Neighborhood. What an amazing man. I wish I had even one ounce of Mr. Rogers’ character.

Randy Pausch, the Carnegie Mellon University professor who became famous for his upbeat and humorous look at getting what you want out of life, has died at age 47. He suffered from terminal pancreatic cancer.
His “Last Lecture,” an inspirational speech he gave to students, became a huge hit online a few months ago. Normally Pie Heaven isn’t about life advice or positive, upbeat messages, but I feel like this is one video definitely worth watching.
