It’s amazing to me that we live in a world where kids can send a camera to space and verify it’s round, yet there are people who still believe the world is flat because their holy book says so.

Japan is a country that took the phrase “Create solutions for problems that don’t exist” way too seriously.
This is still awesome though.

“Tiny spy cameras allow you to see some of the world’s most magnificent birds in flight. Watch this video to learn how the fastest bird on the planet, the peregrine falcon, keeps control at mind-numbing speeds, and take a flight with the master of maneuverability, the Gos Hawk, as it flies through dense woodland.”

High Dynamic Range photography has been all the rage the last few years, but this is the first time I’ve seen it done with video! The way HDR works is a series of photos of the same object are taken at different levels of exposure — first exposing for the sky / background, then the object, then the foreground (and other intermediaries). Then all of the photos are digitally stitched together to create a photo where every area of it is perfectly exposed. This makes photos look beautiful and vibrant, almost like a painting.
Now this is possible with video — at least a very preliminary version of it with two different exposure levels. I predict that in a few years, HDR video will be all the rage. It just looks so awesome. Check out the video:

A brilliant (and very simple) technique for getting free internet access at paid Wireless hotspots. If there is already another user who has paid for access, it’s very easy to find their IP address and trick the network into thinking that you are that user. This is a bit technical, but surprisingly simple when it comes down to it!

But robots learning how to do anything is still pretty damn cool. Other than kill people and take over the world. I’m not a fan of that. (Thanks, Jim)

This was interesting, but I also found it super creepy because of the computerized voices they used.

This video tallies up all 2053 nuclear explosions that have taken place around the globe up to 1998. Damn. Mankind is going to destroy itself, it’s just a matter of time.

The first video is a brilliant chimp solving a simple problem that most humans could figure out in a matter of minutes. The second video is Neil Degrasse Tyson speaking on the relative intelligences of chimps vs. humans vs. … higher beings.
Watch these two clips back-to-back. It will blow your f’n mind.

Waves in a Large Free Sphere of Water – An experiment at the International Space Station. The narrator sounds like an excited kid explaining something to their parent!
