MPAA tells teachers: don’t rip DVDs, just record your TV with a camcorder!

The Electronic Frontier Foundation’s Fred von Lohmann sez, “Hearings for the DMCA triennial rulemaking are going on this week in DC, where the educational community is asking for an exemption to rip DVDs to take clips for classroom use. The MPAA responded with a video showing how to camcord (!) movies from a flat screen monitor, arguing that educators and students should do this instead of ripping DVDs. In the words of media literacy researcher Martine Courant Rife, that’s like typing up a quote from a book, taking it outside, chiseling the words in a rock, photographing the rock, scanning the photo, and running OCR on it. And for what?”

Just further proof that the MPAA is stupid and evil.

CNN does a story on the Keyboard Cat with that annoying-voiced reporter; makes it seem really lame and stupid; explains how the original video was made (completely unnecessary); and then tries to replicate it themselves using CNN clips….and fails miserably. I’m already questioning whether Keyboard Cat is going the way of the RickRoll.

Oregon may allow rolling stops for bicyclers to mazimize riding efficiency

“The Oregon Legislature is considering passage of a law that would allow bicycle riders to treat stop signs as yield signs. These “rolling stops” would allow bike riders to preserve some of the momentum they depend upon for efficient travel, just so long as they don’t infringe on the safety and rights of others.”

“The law is based on one that’s been successful in Idaho for the last 27 years, so it’s come to be known as the Idaho Stop law.”

I think it’s funny that 1. this is even an issue; and 2. that there is a lobbyist group who went out of their way to make this video. Oh Oregon. You card.
