High Dynamic Range photography has been all the rage the last few years, but this is the first time I’ve seen it done with video! The way HDR works is a series of photos of the same object are taken at different levels of exposure — first exposing for the sky / background, then the object, then the foreground (and other intermediaries). Then all of the photos are digitally stitched together to create a photo where every area of it is perfectly exposed. This makes photos look beautiful and vibrant, almost like a painting.
Now this is possible with video — at least a very preliminary version of it with two different exposure levels. I predict that in a few years, HDR video will be all the rage. It just looks so awesome. Check out the video:

1940s educational film about the intricate (and ingenious) internal workings of a pocket watch. I had no idea how complicated it all was!

The guy that made the video is kind of a tool, but the technique is pretty cool.

A brilliant (and very simple) technique for getting free internet access at paid Wireless hotspots. If there is already another user who has paid for access, it’s very easy to find their IP address and trick the network into thinking that you are that user. This is a bit technical, but surprisingly simple when it comes down to it!

Another one of those videos showing how easy it is to circumvent locks and security devices. Locks really only buy you piece of mind and keep out the dumbest of crooks. If someone is really determined to break in, they will get through.

This was interesting, but I also found it super creepy because of the computerized voices they used.

This guy, who calls himself “BENO,” has made dozens of videos documenting his rides up and down elevators (“lifts” ’cause he’s British). He also made a brilliant animation (the first video) about one fateful lift ride, which you MUST watch to the very end. I’m not sure who this guy is, but I love his fantastic blog and his collection of photos of mundane objects like traffic lights and telephone poles. He’s some kind of mad genius, with the best accent of all time.

Excellent tips for not getting KIDNAPPED AND CHILD MOLESTED. Also, great tips for being fucking rude to everyone you meet. Though I do love the quote “If you tell anybody about our little secret, I’ll kill your dog.”

Another fantastic drunk history video from the Funny Or Die crew! “Watch the story of how the friendship of Abraham Lincoln (Will Ferrell) and Fredrick Douglass (Don Cheadle) overcame the slavery movement and the racism that existed in their day. Mary Todd Lincoln (Zooey Deschanel) also stars in this epic re-telling of a true American story. Watch as Jen Kirkman has two bottles of wine and tells us the story. “

The sexiest CPR instructional video ever created. Now that this exists, I’m sure nobody in the history of the world will ever die of cardio-pulmonary stoppage ever again.

“An AP Psychology teacher wrote a song enumerating several types of cognitive bias — the blindspots in our thinking — for his students.” If you’re a critical thinking nerd like myself, you will probably enjoy this.
