A moment of silence for “Herbie,” the oldest elm tree in New England at an estimated 240 years of age, which was cut down Tuesday after succumbing to a fungal disease. The tree, older than the nation, was in the town of Yarmouth whose motto “our latchstring always out” is quaint, to say the least. Frank Knight, 101, has been the caretaker of Herbie for over half a century.
