Back in 1987, Crispin Glover did a famous interview with David Letterman that has gone down in history as one of the most awkward exchanges in television history, and resulted in Letterman walking off the stage after Glover tried to kick him. Just the other day, Joaquin Phoenix and Letterman had a similar awkward (some would say “drugged out”) interview.
Well, Crispin Glover’s interview, it turns out, was a piece of performance art that has been dubbed the “Theater of Discomfort.” Many people believe that Phoenix’s interview is also a Borat-style bit of performance art, for an upcoming “documentary” about his transition from an A-list Hollywood Actor to a bearded hip hop mogul. I definitely remember the Crispin Glover interview. I really hope that Joaquin was also in character because Letterman is a straight up a-hole.
