Manhattan Bridge Sways in Traffic

Time-lapse video showing the Manhattan Bridge swinging up and down as car and subway traffic cross it. Apparently, bridges would collapse during extreme weather if they weren’t built like this.

Scott Rosenberg, author of a new book called Say Everything: How Blogging Began, What It’s Becoming, and Why It Matters investigates. The problem is the definition of “blog” is pretty blurry. I know that I started my first site that could be considered a “blog” in 1998… and the website is still live; Pete’s QBasic Site.

A.I. Mario Speed Runs

There’s a really cool programming contest going on to create an Artificial Intelligence bot that can play Super Mario World. The current front-runner is this guy, and he’s done incredibly well so far. The maps that are used are from the “Infinite Mario” project, so they are randomly generated to make things fair. I am definitely going to follow this project, because it’s really awesome watching Mario run by at inhumanly fast and accurate speeds.

Turbulent Tanking: In Flight Airplane Refueling

I remember attempting to do this on Top Gun for the NES and it being incredibly difficult. If it was that hard on Nintendo, it must be incredibly difficult in real life!

“This is a video of a Navy F/A-18 Hornet tanking from Air Force KC-10’s and KC-135’s (the KC-135 is particularly challenging– pilots call it the “Iron Maiden”). In turbulent weather, especially at night, tanking can be even tougher than landing on the ship. The basket is heavy, and it can damage the plane if it strikes it, to include shattering the canopy. One can only imagine the amusement of the tanker crews (to whom we’re very grateful) as they watch us flail around on a bumpy day. ”
